Best breadmaker deals on Homemade Bread Day 2022

Today is Homemade Bread Day. Some report that this event was started in the 1980s by the National Homemade Bread Committee to “encourage people to make bread at home and rely less on store-bought bread”, but others argue that its origins are unknown. Wherever this event began, there’s no denying that we’re a nation of bread-loving Brits, so it comes as no surprise that we jumped at the chance to celebrate the humble loaf.

Research by Kantar in 2018 found that bread products are purchased by 99.8% of British households – that’s equivalent to 11 million loaves of bread sold each day. With 3,570 specialist bakeries and 12,704 supermarkets nationwide, bread is pretty easy to come by in the UK, but there’s something extra-special about a loaf you’ve made yourself.

Google Trends data from the last five years shows that the number of people searching for the term “bread recipe” is consistent year on year. But, unsurprisingly, the pandemic saw searches hit an all-time high.

Either through necessity or the extra time we were all being afforded, lockdown saw many turn to home baking. In fact, breadmaking was the biggest trend of the year at BBC Good Food. As sourdough starters bubbled away and bakes became more daring, for many of us, breadmaking turned into a hobby that has lived on beyond the pandemic.

As much as we love to get hands-on when breadmaking, it’s not always practical. Enter: the breadmaker. These nifty appliances knead, prove, knock back and shape loaves at the touch of a button, all without you having to lift a finger or turn the oven on.

We’ve tested a wide variety of breadmakers, from small and simple models, to large devices that make bread, plus jam, cakes, yogurt and more. Whether you’re a novice looking to enter the world of baking or after an upgrade, we’ve rounded-up the best breadmaker deals on our tried and tested models to help you save dough this Homemade Bread Day.
